Watches and Water

As a rule watches and water don't mix, unless you purchase a watch with specific water resistant labeling. Before wearing your watch in the shower or while taking a swim, make sure you understand just how much water your watch can handle.

There are three main categories for watchcases: non-water resistant, water resistance and diver cases.

  • Non-Water Resistant Case: Most dress watches are made of thin gaskets that provide only minimal protection from moisture. If the watchcase doesn't mention water resistance, assume that it has no specific water-resistant construction. Your watch will probably survive an accidental splash of water, but little more. Take off your watch when bathing, doing dishes and washing the car. Even perspiration from strenuous activities can damage these watches.
  • Water-Resistant Case: Watches that can withstand some exposure to water are labeled "water-resistant" on the case. If there is no number following these words, your watch should survive the typical splashes when you wash your hands or get caught in the rain. For greater resistance, chose a watch with a number imprinted after the "water-resistant" label. This number indicates the depth below sea level and the accompanying pressure that the watch should withstand when it is new. For example, a watch labeled "Water Resistant 50m" could be worn when bathing, swimming, washing the car, and snorkeling. As the watch ages, however, the gasket that keeps the water out weakens. This reduces the water resistance. Ask your jeweler about routine maintenance, testing and replacement of the gasket to keep the watch water-resistant. If you participate in strenuous activities or sports on a regular basis, consider a 100m rating to keep out perspiration. Consider buying a watch with higher water classification, perhaps 200m if you swim regularly with your watch.
  • Diver Case: Diver cases, with their heavy gaskets and cases are designed for serious scuba dives. Divers should have their watches tested annually to assure that gaskets are tight and don't leak. Replacing gaskets as needed will help keep the watch mechanism dry.

If you are unsure about the water resistance of your watch, ask your jeweler.
